鲁迅是我国新兴版画艺术的伟大开拓者和奠基人。在半殖民地半封建的旧中国,为了培养和灌溉中国新兴木刻这株艺苑新花,他辛勤培育革命的木刻队伍,重视继承和发扬自己民族的优秀文化传统,同时把一些革命的和进步的外国版画陆续编印出版,介绍给中国青年木刻家们作为艺术上的借鉴;他又曾亲自主持木刻讲习会,多次参加筹备中外木刻展览会,给从事木刻工作(文学工作)青年写回信进行指导,并尽力争取为他们发表作品等等。其目的就是为了促使中国新兴木刻运动和木刻队伍迅速、健康地茁壮成长。广州现代创作版画研究会就是在鲁迅先生亲切关怀、扶植下发展起来的一个负有盛名的木刻团体,它在中国新兴木刻运动史上留下了光辉的足迹,木刻家赖少其就是在这一团体中成长起来的一名将士。
