Britain, the United States and Russia are preparing to conduct a joint probe on East Lake, the largest ice-bottom lake in Antarctica. Scientists plan to use two years to drill through the 4,000-m-thick ice of East Lake to study whether unknown life forms exist in the ice that has frozen millions of years. Scientists in the study will use advanced ice heating drilling machine. After being specially disinfected, this kind of drilling machine will not pollute the original lake water. After reaching the ice lake, it will release the underwater robot. The robot will send out strong light to scan the lake to search for the signs of life. The ice drilling rig used to probe “East Lake” was developed by NASA and a similar installation is likely to be used to find life on Jupiter satellites in the future. Scientists have discovered thick ice sheets on Europa and speculated that there may be life under the ice. NASA said the “East Lake” exploration program was provided
