Social assistance is part of social security. It targets low-income and impoverished people in natural disasters and, on the principle of necessity, guarantees the most basic living needs of these members through relief and subsidies. After the restoration of Taiwan in October 1945, the newly established Taiwan Provincial Chief Executive Office and the provincial government of Taiwan established after the provincial-government reform in April 1947 have implemented a series of social relief policies on the island of Taiwan.
