To rejuvenate public spaces in the heart of Malta’s capital, Valletta, Renzo Piano’s studio needs to manage the balance between conserving important historical heritage and building contemporary public facilities to meet today’s urban needs. The architects set out to restore the original proportions of the city’s bridges, moats and gates, and explore ways to uncover Valletta’s cultural heritage as a military seaport while improving the flow of pedestrians on the roads. Due to their environmental sensitivity, the project has been subject to unavoidable controversy since its planning. Renzo Piano’s advice was seen by some as too conservative and missed the opportunity to make bold improvements to the modern function of urban space. The project consists of four sections: the Valletta gate and the external field adjacent to the ramparts
