中国石油吐哈油田分公司研究院内联网(Intranet)经过前几年的建设,已建成了以快速以太网络为主干、以交换/共享技术为基础的网络框架,网络拓扑为星型树状,对于主要的服务器和地学研究工作站实现独享100M 带宽,为研究院的科学研究及科研管理提供了重要的工具。但随着互联网技术的不断提高,用户端的信息始向多元化、复杂化发展。语音、图像及视频等多媒体信息不断加入网络,使原本拥挤的网络被多媒体信息所阻塞。除了桌面连接选择之外,网络中不断添加的交换机/集线器也进一步加大了带宽上的压力,分布于网络边缘的交换机/集线器极大地增加了业务量,因为会有大量的数据需要在工作组、服务器或骨干网络的层次上汇聚。加之研究院工作站、微机平台应用软件的大型化、复杂化,图像、视频等多媒体信息的网络调用,使科技人员对网络的带宽、结构、性能等要求越来越高。因此
