Vacuum insulated tubing first put into service in Alaska, the United States, its purpose is to ensure that permafrost is not melted during hot oil mining. By the early 1980s, such tubing was widely used for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) for heavy oil production in Bakersfield, California and heavy tar sands in northern Alberta, Canada. These early EOR programs are currently used to prevent wax formation and avoid the formation of hydrates in marine completions. In 1995, DiamondPower took the lead in the United States in the Gulf of Mexico will be vacuum heat pipe used in the completion of the sea.
