Foreword Comrade Sha Ting is one of my most respected predecessors and one of my strict teachers whom I have been following for many years. His life-long pursuit of the spirit of the truth, that just being forthright personality, that attitude toward artistic creation extremely, gave me a great influence. He wrote many letters to me before his death, but unfortunately a few have been lost during the ten years of turmoil and now contain 13 letters after the “Cultural Revolution.” From these letters, I can see some of his later years of life, thinking and creation, seeing part of his literary views on the work, his concern for his contemporaries and his love for and education of younger writers. These thirteen letters, my collection of books are also stored in my heart. Each read, such as the old sand surface smell sand old sound, is to commemorate the endless spur. I send these letters to the editorial department of “Historical Materials of New Literature,” and I urge them to be published. Because these words will be a real source of information for scholars who have studied Shatin’s literature career, they will also have some enlightenment for the majority of literary creators. To me, they also express a deep memory . In order to clarify the background of the letter, I added a few small notes after the letter; maybe it is unnecessary.
