碱茅草是禾本科丛生型多年生草本植物。具有耐盐碱、耐旱、喜湿、耐寒和分蘖力强等优点,属优质耐盐饲草。其耐盐力超过所有的栽培牧草,为苜蓿耐盐力的3—4倍。能改良土壤,能使0—100cm土层较快地脱盐并对表土进行一定程度地培肥。碱茅草可作为改良盐碱地的先锋植物,也是在盐碱地上建立草地农业的优良草种。加速发展碱茅草,对收复弃耕地,巩固新耕地,加速低产田改良,发展农区草业,促进畜牧业发展,都具有重要意义。
