有关孔子的正面评价和引用在美国媒体上一直都有出现,但1849—1882年期间的此类现象具有尤其重要的意义。华人劳工的到来,迅速引起美国人的巨大恐慌和文化偏见,进而在媒体上引发一片针对中国移民和中国传统的讨伐和贬损之声。然而,报刊杂志在某些场合和情形下毫不避讳地赞扬孔子及其学说、将孔子思想作为社会与政治生活中有益的参照体系。此类举动无疑是理性的,对于中美文化关系的延续有着明显的积极意义。
The positive comments and citations of Confucius have always appeared in the American media, but such phenomena of 1849-1882 are of particular importance. The arrival of Chinese laborers rapidly aroused great panic and cultural prejudice among Americans and thus triggered a crushing and derogatory voice on Chinese immigrants and Chinese tradition in the media. However, in some occasions and situations, newspapers and magazines unanimously applaud Confucius and his teachings for using Confucius’ thought as a useful frame of reference in social and political life. Such moves are undoubtedly rational and have obvious positive significance for the continuation of the cultural relations between China and the United States.
