The Salado River is located in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has a total length of 6 90 km and a drainage area of about 80 000 km 2. The average annual runoff is 3.5 billion m3, which is typical of plain rivers. There are three estuaries to the Sarado River, of which artificial river 15 has widened and deepened since dredging since 1997, diverting most of the water from the Salado River. In order to study the changes in the environmental and hydrological characteristics of the Salado River, total dissolved matter (TDS) and ionic compounds in the river water were measured in three stages from 1997 to 1999. The results show that due to the diversion of river 15, the water balance in the lower reaches of the Sarado River has been broken, resulting in some changes in its ecological conditions and hydrological characteristics, which in turn cause the socio-economic conditions of the local population to also change
