1959年秋,云南省京剧团《孔雀胆》剧组到全国几个省市巡回演出,由于剧中扮演段宝的小演员一时没有合适的人选,在省京剧团担任主要演员的我母亲刘美娟便推荐刚上小学四年级的我来客串扮演小段宝。尽管当时我才9岁,但从小就听惯了母亲的喊嗓,耳濡目染,也能跟着大人哼上几句,好在这个角色难度不大,经过几天的演练,基本能胜任这个角色。10月,我随云南省京剧团来到了首都北京,参加国庆十周年庆祝活动,并作了几场演出。毛主席、刘少奇副主席、周总理等党和国家领导人都来看了我们的演出。

Chairman Mao, Vice Chairman Liu Shaoqi and Premier Zhou and other party and state leaders came to see our performances.
