罗汉果是属葫芦科(Cucusrbitaceae)藤本生的多年生宿根植物,是广西桂北特产药材之一。它的学名是Mornordica grosvenori Swfng。原产马来群岛,蔓生草本,具卷须,能攀缘它物上升,单叶、互生,心脏形,有柄。花小,六、七月间开花,雌雄异株,子房膨大,下位。开花后需经人工授粉始能发育结实,果实球状,外面紫褐色,径约一寸五分许,中有种子四、五枚。种子外部假种皮多汁而有甘味,为热带著名的果实,俗称“果王”。果为浆果,含有丰富的葡萄糖。果实入药,也可食用。为润肺、治咳佳品,熬水食可以止渴,南洋一带在夏天
