Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that targets its own nuclear antigens, the most important of which include nucleosome complexes, histones and DNA. A feature of programmed cell death or apoptosis is the cleavage of nuclear chromatin into oligomeric nucleosomes which are then released into the extracellular space. Whether these nucleosomes serve as immunogens to drive the autoimmune response; whether peripheral blood lymphocyte apoptosis in SLE patients is related to the pathogenesis of SLE, we review the relationship between SLE apoptosis and the origin of autoantigens.
