桂希恩并非出身于医学世家,他的父母及兄弟姐妹中没有一个人是学医的。然而,桂希恩从小酷爱运动,深知健康对于人生的重要意义,他还热衷于探险,特别是探究人体秘密。因此,填报大学志愿时,桂希恩毫不犹豫地选择了同济医科大学的前身--武汉医学院。桂希恩说,人生就是一个不断求索的过程。1960年,桂希恩从武汉医学院毕业,志愿赴青海省从事地方病防治及临床医务,在那里一待就是16年。他经常一个人骑着马到处走,给牧民们治病、抽血打针、访贫问苦。在那里,他接触了鼠疫、绦虫病、乌孜杆菌等几乎青海所有的地方病,为自己打下了扎实的医疗实践基础。

There, he came into contact with all the endemic diseases in Qinghai, such as Plague, Taeniasis and Urumqi, laying a solid foundation for their medical practice.
