一通往腰带山绵延的山路上,一早一晚人们总会看见一位脚穿胶鞋的中年妇女,来去匆匆,步履矫健。她,就是20年如一日,为荒山披绿的丰润县黄昏峪开滦煤矿合作林场分场场长李慧莲。“如果有人问我长大了干什么?我会响亮地回答:绿化荒山,绿化家乡。”这是李慧莲小学时作文中的一句话。1973年当时的公社推荐她上中专,她在选学专业一栏中添上了“林业”二字,只是由于某位领导让亲属顶替了她的名额,李慧莲没能去上中专。1974年,黄昏峪公社与开滦煤矿联合建立了林场,李慧莲积极争取,成了第一批入场的工人,并以工作积极,成绩突出被任命为铁姑娘造林突击队队长。
