Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Chemical Develop New Porous Carbon Materials On June 20, 2013, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (Shin Nippon Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.) formally announced that its porous carbon material, jointly developed with researchers at the Institute of Molecular Science, “ESCARBON Paradox” succeeded. The product is a new type of mesoporous carbon nano dendrimer (MCND) functional material, which takes acetylene carbon and metal atoms to form a metal acetylene compound (C≡C) as a precursor and has a mesopore diameter of 2 ~ 50 nm, micropore diameter less than 2 nm. With a nano-dendritic structure separated into fine pores by a graphene sheet, the product has high conductivity, durability and gas-liquid diffusibility and can be used as a battery material, a catalyst carrier, a gas-absorbing material, etc.
