1936年10月19日,鲁迅先生在上海寓所逝世。文坛巨星陨落,举世震惊。10月20日至22日上午,鲁迅先生的遗体安置在万国殡仪馆的礼堂里,各界人士络绎不绝地前来瞻仰遗容,向这位中华民族的“民族魂”致最后的敬礼,作最后的告别。礼堂里摆满了人们送来的花圈、花篮,四周的墙上悬挂着许多的挽幛和挽联,以凝炼的语育表达了人们对这位文化巨人的敬意与哀思。在挽联中,有一副颇为显眼,其上写道:
