兰州西编组站是西北地区最大的区域性编组站。它衔接陇海、兰新、包兰、兰青4条干线,担负着4个方向客货列车的接发和货物列车的编解任务,同时还承担着全局最大的货场及28条专用线的作业车的编解取送作业。因此,加强兰州西编组站的能力,对保证西北铁路干线的畅通,提高西北路网的整体能力,具有十分重要的意义。为适应运量发展和安全生产的需要,兰州局从1987年起,先后投产近1000万元,围绕扩能、提效和安全开展科研攻关和技术引进,对一些关键部位进行了现代化改造,使改编能力由机械化驼峰的5014辆提高到6070辆,所采用的现代化设备如下。
