Objective To understand the freshmen HBsAg positive rate and elevated ALT, to provide a reference for the development of hepatitis B prevention and treatment measures. Methods A total of 13774 freshmen from 2003-2008 in a university were enrolled in this study. Hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) was detected with HBsAg colloidal gold test strip and ALT was detected by alanine aminotransferase kit. Results The positive rate of HBsAg in newborn was 3.36%, which showed a trend of declining year by year, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.01). The positive rate of HBsAg and ALT was 0.24%, also showed a downward trend year by year, with no significant difference (P > 0.05). The positive rate of HBsAg in boys was significantly higher than that in girls (P <0.01), while there was no significant difference between male and female students with HBsAg positive and elevated ALT. Conclusions The positive rate of HBsAg in college freshmen is lower than the national average, and shows a declining trend year by year. The positive rate of HBsAg in boys is higher than that of girls.
