Shandong Province is one of the major sweet potato producing provinces in China. From the late 1950s to the 1970s, the province planted about 25 million mu of perennials. After entering the 1980s, with the improvement of people’s living standards, sweet potatoes in most areas were no longer staple crops and the planting was reduced. In recent years, it has remained at about 12 million mu, accounting for about 10% of the sown area of food crops.
