New Zealand researchers recently reported that exposure to a smoking environment (passive smoking) by non-smokers or people who have long been abstinent can significantly increase the risk of acute stroke. Ruth Bonita of the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and their collaborators concluded that the findings of this “independent increase in the risk of stroke associated with exposure to the smoking environment” provided the current public health efforts to reduce passive smoking trends and to combat smoking stand by.
