The first International Symposium on Concrete Blocks was held in Washington, DC, from November 16 to 23, 1980. More than 200 representatives from 20 countries participated in the conference. The seminar was initiated by the International Concrete Block Commission of the International Concrete Bureau (BIBM) in the United Kingdom and organized by the American Concrete Block Association. The main contents of the discussion included the progress in the quality standards, conservation methods, and production, research, and new uses of concrete blocks, of which energy conservation is the central topic of discussion at the meeting.
