11948年10月。一列从北平开往上海的火车。火车高速行驶在江南的原野上。尖厉的汽笛声划破了黑的夜空,随着阵阵汽笛声,一团团乳白色的蒸汽向车尾快速掠去。7号硬席车厢内,坐着一位穿灰色粗呢西装的外国旅客。他叫乔奇,持有苏联护照。乔奇看上去很年轻,二十五六岁的模样,长着一张具有东欧人典型特征的脸:高鼻子,双眼凹陷,脸瘦削,略黄的头发梳理得很整齐。乔奇坐在全是穿旗袍抑或穿长衫的中国旅客中间,显得格外抢眼。他低着头,正在打瞌睡,嘴角上还不时流露出几丝得意的微笑。也许,他正在梦中为自己能成功骗过苏联驻北平办事处的一等秘书雪立琴而洋洋得意。在北平,无生活着落的乔奇曾向苏联驻北平办事处求助过。办事处的一等秘书雪立琴要他写一份情况。乔奇在自述中把自己天花乱坠地吹嘘了一通。说自己二次大战中在美国海军陆战队服役过,曾在美军舰艇上当过报务员,该舰艇专门在舟山群岛一带收集美军在海战中的尸骸;他还在张家口和八路军有过联系,为了偷日本人的军事地图,曾杀死过日本人云云。雪立琴相信了他.问乔奇准备去哪里落脚。乔奇说去上海。此时恰遇军事顾问罗斯上校进屋。雪立琴把乔奇介绍给了罗斯上校,让他有困难去找罗斯帮忙,罗斯过几天将去上海工作。罗斯上校和夫人罗丝洛娃在上海住过三年,夫妻俩都会说中文,都是中国通。
