中国传统戏曲在近现代文化艺术变革中走向式微,其艺术精神遭到误读甚至误解。与近代在译介和学习西方戏剧基础上产生的现代话剧不同,传统戏曲并不像话剧那样单纯讲求故事叙事与真实再现社会生活,而是注重以“歌舞表演故事”。戏曲中的音乐、诗歌和舞蹈作为表现手段的独特性和它们各自独立的审美存在使得戏曲更注重表现人物的内心世界,尤其是其中的音乐(曲)性质,在传统戏曲中占有重要和特殊的位置,这是中国传统戏曲艺术的客观存在。
