Saab Underwater Systems in Sweden has developed a submarine remotely operated vehicle(SUBROV) designed to be operated from a standard submarine 533 mm torpedo tube. It covers a range of tasks including: underwater work, observation, inspection, communications or supporting special forces, as well as to help recover autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) when they return from their mission.
SUBROV is housed in a 6.5 m-long container unit (weight: 700 kg) with the same form factor as a heavyweight torpedo including a diameter of 533 mm. This is to enable the unit to be handled and used much in the same way as a torpedo. It is self-contained and only requires external power (up to 5 kW) from the submarine; as such it can be used in existing submarines without requiring any modification to the boat.
SUBROV can operate at speeds between 0 to 3 kt and at a water depth of 500 m. It is capable of lifting a cargo of up to 40 kg.
The SUBROV’s control system makes it much more stable than conventional gravity-stabilised ROVs, the vehicle is capable of full 360° stabilisation at all attitudes. This would allow precise docking of SUBROV itself and of a recovered AUV. The AUV would be positioned by the SUBROV ahead of the submarine, placed in front of the AUV’s own torpedo tube opening, and then carefully pushed inside where the AUV can subsequently be accessed by the submarine’s crew (after the tube has been drained of water) for data download, recharging and/or a payload change.
Another capability offered by SUBROV is the ability to go outside the submerged submarine to perform visual inspections of the submarine itself or the area surrounding it. It can also be used as a remote periscope, breaking the surface for a quick 360°visual search at a position up to 2 km away from the submarine.
When supporting special operations forces, SUBROV could be used to deploy or recover sensors, to provide transport for divers or equipment from and/or to the submarine, or to provide an online communications link to the submarine.
