八思巴字由元世祖于1269年正式颁行,初称“蒙古新字”,后称“蒙古字”,因其为藏人八思巴创制,现通称八思巴字。八思巴字在有元一代是官方推行的“国字”,行用到北元,大约存在了一百一十多年,其后废行成了死文字。当它行用之时,不仅用于拼写蒙古语,还用来“译写一切文字”(颁行诏书语),如汉语、藏语、梵语、维吾尔语等。其中拼写汉语的八思巴字资料,对于研究元代历史、蒙汉民族
Ba Si Ba was formally issued by Yuan Shizu in 1269, and was first called “Mongol New Word” and later called “Mongolian Word.” It is commonly known as Ba Si Ba because it is created by Ba Ba. Ba Si Ba word in the Yuan generation is the official implementation of the “national character”, the use of the North yuan, there existed about 110 years, then the waste became dead words. When it is used, it is not only used to spell Mongolian, but also to “translate and write everything” (enactment of imperial edicts) such as Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Uighur and so on.
