Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of vitamin E (VE) -assisted levetiracetam (LEV) in the treatment of epilepsy and its effects on plasma total antioxidant capacity (T-Aoc) and malondialdehyde (MDA) Methods: A total of 134 epilepsy patients admitted to our hospital from June 2013 to September 2015 were randomly divided into two groups. The control group was treated with LEV, and the observation group was treated with VE on the basis of this. The clinical efficacy, the background electrocardiogram (EEG) background activity and plasma T-Aoc and MDA levels before and after treatment were recorded and compared. The safety of the two groups was also evaluated. Results: The total effective rate in observation group was 88.1%, which was significantly higher than that in control group (74.6%) (P <0.05). Compared with before treatment, the EEG index δ, θ wave frequency of both groups were significantly increased (P <0.05); α wave frequency was significantly slowed down (P <0.05), and the observation group after treatment EEG improved The results were significantly better than the control group (P <0.05). Compared with those before treatment, plasma T-Aoc level and MDA level in the observation group were significantly decreased (P <0.01), while T-Aoc levels in the control group increased slightly and MDA levels slightly decreased, but the difference was not statistically significant (P> 0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group was 10.4%, which was not significantly different from that in the control group (7.5%) (P> 0.05). Conclusion: VE-assisted LEV treatment of epilepsy can effectively reduce the frequency of seizures, improve the background activity of the EEG, balance the body’s oxidation / anti-oxidation system, and high safety.
