About 70kg healthy body weight of about 12kg protein and 17kg fat. 12kg protein belongs to the muscle and non-muscle protein. In vivo protein loss of more than 30% can cause death. In contrast, a loss of 30% of body fat causes weight loss only, with little effect on functional activity and survival. This article discusses: Why protein maintenance in vivo is so important for survival; how to measure protein updates; and recent studies on some of the consequences of changes in protein turnover in the body.
