It has been demonstrated that P. falciparum gametocidal surface antigen Pfs48 / 45 is the target of a transmissible blocking antibody and its use of monoclonal antibodies is also well established for the presence of antigenic determinants. The aim of this study was to confirm the response of naturally occurring antibodies to these important determinants in populations with high levels of malaria and to determine whether there is any difference in the positive rates between populations and blood groups in different village and age groups. Using competitive ELISA, the authors investigated the malaria epidemiology and infectivity of the three villages in Papua New Guinea and possible linkages between antibodies and gametophyte carriers. The results found that more than 1/3 of people
