书院的制度,由来已久,自唐代创设丽正书院以后,两宋、元、明沿承设立,与科举相辅而行。清代继起,科举制度多沿袭前明,也照样设立书院。福州全省性的书院共4所,即鳌峰、凤池、正谊和致用,当时称为福州四大书院;属于地方性的,只有越山书院一所。
The institution of the academy has a long history.
