Seismic moments are determined from coda waves of moderate and large earthquakes recorded by the broad-band SK instrument at large epicentral distance. These moments from coda waves are consistent with those given by Dziewonski and Woodhouse(1983), which come from GDSN digitized recorded data, the average of the differences being 0.24 order of magnitude. When the coda-obtained M0 values are compared to Ms, the relation obtained between log(Mo) and Ms is in good agreement with that given by Hanks and Kanamori (1979).The shear stress distribution on a global scale is studied by using the data of seismic moments and body wave magnitudes mb. It is found that the Western Circum-pacific region and the Hindu-kush and Assam areas, which are located in the thrust regions of the Indian plate, have very high shear stress together with relatively high seismicity. The rest of the seismic areas of the world have intermediate or low shear stress.
