A research group at the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo successfully developed, for the first time in the world, a new asymmetric Lewis acid catalyst that is stable in air. The catalyst is based on a blend of zirconium metal and synthetic zeolite, which stabilizes in water and oxygen and prolongs shelf life. Lewis acid catalyst can accept electron pairs, so it is an important means of organic synthesis. General asymmetric Lewis acid catalysis
