Objective To study the expression of CD44 and CD54 in peripheral blood lymphocytes during the development and progression of primary glaucoma and its clinical significance. Methods Peripheral blood was collected from 28 patients with primary glaucoma and 28 healthy controls. CD44-FITC and CD54-FITC immunoreactions were detected by lymphocyte separation. The expression of CD44 and CD54 were measured by flow cytometry and analyzed statistically. Results The expression of CD44 and CD54 in peripheral blood lymphocytes in primary angle-closure and open-angle glaucoma patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls (P <0.01). The difference was significant. Conclusion The increased expression of adhesion molecules CD44 and CD54 is related to the occurrence and development of primary glaucoma. CD44 and CD54 may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of primary glaucoma.
