Objective To analyze the nutritional status of vitamin A in children and adolescents aged 6 ~ 17 in rural areas of China from 2010 to 2012. Methods Based on the Chinese residents’ nutrition and health monitoring project from 2010 to 2012, the serum samples from children and adolescents surveyed in rural areas and poor rural areas were selected as the study subjects by simple random sampling method with multi-stage stratification and population proportion. A total of 5,888 samples were collected by random sampling method. Serum retinol concentration was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the nutritional status of vitamin A in rural children and adolescents was evaluated. Results Serum retinol concentration was (1.44 ± 0.58) μmol / L in rural children and adolescents in China, with (1.40 ± 0.56) μmol / L and (1.46 ± 0.60) μmol / L for rural and poor rural areas respectively P <0.05). The levels of serum retinol in rural and poor rural areas from 6 to 11 years old were (1.31 ± 0.53) μmol / L and (1.37 ± 0.60) μmol / L, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in 12 to 17 years old group (1.52 ± 0.57) μmol / L and (1.52 ± 0.60) μmol / L (t = 11.90 and t = 5.54, P <0.05). The overall lack of vitamin A in children and adolescents in rural areas was 5.53%, with 6.14% and 4.55% in rural areas and poor rural areas respectively. The rate of marginalization was 18.75%, with 19.17% and 18.07% respectively in rural areas and poor rural areas, with no difference Statistical significance. Conclusion Vitamin A deficiency in children and adolescents in rural areas of China is still widespread, among which the marginalization is more prominent.
