材料历来是人类进步的重要里程碑,历史上的石器时代、铜器时代、铁器时代都是以材料作为标志的。就是在今天,如果没有超高温、超高强度结构材料,便不可能有今天的火箭和航天飞机;没有半导体材料的工业化生产,便不可能有当前高速发展的电子工业;没有低损耗的光导纤维,也就没有当今世界蓬勃发展的光通讯。正因为如此,我国和世界先进国家都将材料科学与技术列为重点发展的带头学科之一。
