《读书》创刊时,王晓渔才刚刚出生不久。对于《读书》来说,他应该算是第二代年轻读者。在上大学之前,出生于安徽城镇的王晓渔从来没有听说过《读书》。而1995年上大学后,却总是听到历史、哲学、文学等不同学科的老师都不约而同地提到了这本杂志。于是他跑到书店购买了第一本《读书》,开始了与《读书》的缘分,那是1995年第十期的《读书》。“我当时从到尾都看了,当时才刚上大学,看不太懂,断断续续看了好多天,一知半解。”后来重新再回看那期杂志,王晓渔才发现,其中有好几篇文章影响很大,比如李零的《汉奸发生学》、朱学勤《思想史上的失踪者》。
