Diphtheria is still endemic in many developing countries where less than 10% of whole-baby immunizations are immunized and it is estimated that millions of people die of diphtheria each year. On the contrary, since the 1920s, the incidence of diphtheria in the United States has steadily declined. Only 2 cases occurred in 1982, and mortality and morbidity dropped in parallel. The author of the woody article focused on the epidemiology of non-skin diphtheria in the United States from 1971 to 1981, and probed into the possible causes of the decline in the incidence of diphtheria and proposed measures for the continued control of diphtheria.
