Ribavirin has shown unusual promise in the development of antiviral drugs. It has a wide range of antiviral activities, involving RNA viruses and various DNA viruses, with minimal side effects. The drug has potent anti-influenza, respiratory syncytial virus infection and Lassa fever and its in vitro inhibition of human T-lymphocyte type III virus.
