In order to check the safety status of the arch dam, regular observation and monitoring of the arch dam has been carried out in Portugal. The most important control variables are displacements and joint displacements, however strain and stress are also measured because strain and stress are important in predicting local and overall failure. The assessment of arch dam strain and stress observed by the National Institute of Civil Engineering in Portugal shows that credible numerical values ​​can be obtained as long as the technical problems in setting up the scope of observation, collecting and interpreting data are solved. The article introduces the observation results of Valosa arch dam.
