老舍常以“幽默”作家的形象展现于世人,不过这种形象的赢获与他和《论语》杂志的关系密不可分。老舍对以“幽默”趣味为标识的《论语》杂志颇为认同,并与之进行了密切的合作。《论语》杂志的话语策略、文化立场,与老舍当时的创作倾向十分契合,并由此形塑了老舍的言说方式和文学形象;在合作期间,老舍的“幽默”作家形象逐渐显现并趋于定型。随着后来文学场域的论争角逐和政治形势的变幻,老舍的“幽默”形象又历经涂抹与更正。
