一、引言20世纪上半叶美国文学迎来了一个空前的繁荣时期,期间诞生了一大批才华横溢的作家,从而确立了美国文学在世界文学中的主流地位。需要注意的是,在美国文学走向繁荣的过程中,并没有出现几个具有影响力的女作家,而薇拉·凯瑟(Willa Cather,1873—1947)就是该时期为数不多的一个女性佼佼者。薇拉·凯瑟出生于弗吉尼亚州,幼年时期随同家人移居西部的内布拉斯加州,深刻体验了大草原的乡村生活,这段经历为其后来的文学创作提供了丰富的素材。
