It is necessary for the design and construction of a project to study the fault activity of a major project site (especially the last event of a fault). Many projects are located in exposed areas of bedrock and lack new formations that characterize fault activity. In order to carry on the work smoothly in these areas, the author explores a new way, that is, using the deformation rock microstructure analysis method and a variety of testing techniques to comprehensively analyze and test the fault zone materials and extract the retained information about the fault activity rules . This paper demonstrates the theoretical basis and feasibility of this method and highlights the results of the study on the application of this method in several major hydropower project sites. These achievements provide a reliable engineering geological basis for engineering designers and also prove the validity and practicability of the research approach.
