英语抽象名词多数情况下用于正式文体,故而大多数人认为在汉英翻译中,英语抽象名词只能应用于翻译语体较为正式的中文文章。本文从英语抽象名词的特性及修辞功能出发,结合中文小说英译实例,指出:英语抽象名词在汉英翻译中的使用不应极限于此。在翻译中文小说或叙事性文字时,合理使用英语抽象名词,不仅能发挥其修辞功能,而且译文在生动性与灵活性方面,也毫不逊色。
In most cases, English abstract nouns are used in formal style. Therefore, most people think that English abstract nouns can only be applied to Chinese texts with a more formal style in Chinese-English translation. Starting from the characteristics of English abstract nouns and their rhetorical functions, this article combines examples of English translation of Chinese novels, pointing out that the use of abstract English nouns in Chinese - English translation should not be limited to this. When translating Chinese novels or narrative texts, the rational use of English abstract nouns can not only exert their rhetorical function, but also translate them into vividness and flexibility.
