The sequence of the Cretaceous sporopollen stratigraphy in Argentina was evaluated by summarizing the published data on the geological bodies containing sporopollen. In seven Cretaceous basins from north to south in Argentina, formal and informal bands of biological tapes were established. The basins are, from north to south, respectively: the Saltaqua Basin, the St. Louis Basin, the Neuquén Basin, the Southern Basin, the Desseaux Massif Basin, the San Jorge Gulf Basin and the Panagian Patagonia Basin. The early Cretaceous sporopollen assemblages in Argentina are relatively well known, but there is little literature describing and discussing Late Cretaceous microfossils. Cyclusphaera-Balmeiopsis-Classopollis, a pollen assemblage of the coniferous gymnosperms, dominated all the sporopollen assemblages in the Vanraninian to Aptian Periods. Celyphus rallus (filamentous fungi) appear with Cyclusphaera, but all disappear throughout the Patagonian basin during the Baltimore period. Pollen fossils from early angiosperms are important hallmarks of the Aptite and younger formations and have been used to define sporo-pollen fossils. Peninsul apollisgillii, which corresponds to the first occurrence of the chamaeleonidae in Argentina, is one of the few species found in the sporopollen assemblage of all late-night pennsular to Maastricht ages, sometimes with Grapnelispora loncochensis. The appearance of these species may be a hallmark of sporo-pollen fossils. This article provides a preliminary comparison of sporopollen fossils and Cretaceous main strata.
