商周时期的青铜镰可分为无銎镰和有銎镰两大类。其中,无銎镰从无栏无穿发展到无栏有穿,最后发展到有栏无穿和有栏有穿的形制;其绑柄方式从直接绑柄到劈缝式,最后出现榫孔式和半劈缝式。无銎镰的形制和绑柄方式的演变过程是相辅相成的。青铜镰出土性质随时代不同稍有不同。商周时期主要出土于南方,它的使用与各地区的铜业资源、文化的发展程度有着很大的关系。齿刃铜镰的出现主要与收割作业有关。
