左旋卡尼汀(L-CN),可由哺乳动物体内自身合成。L-CN的作用是协助长链脂酰辅酶A进入线粒体内膜,促进脂肪酸β氧化,加速三磷酸腺苷的产生,提高组织细胞内三磷酸腺苷水平。以前研究表明,L-CN可以通过改善缺血心肌的功能和促进能量代谢,有效地治疗急性心肌梗死及改善预后;通过改善维持性血液透析患者的红细胞免疫功能、抗氧化功能、降低铁负荷水平,提高血液透析患者的生活质量;通过减少氧自由基生成、增强细胞抗氧化损伤能力,发挥抗氧化、抗凋亡的细胞保护作用。近来研究又发现了L-CN的其他作用。
