According to a recent report from the US Journal, the Cray X-MPEA/18se computer is another new system launched by Cray. The company currently provides users with three entry-level “se” systems, each with 4 million words, 8 million words and 16 million words of storage capacity, with prices of 2.5 million USD, 2.9 million USD and 3.5 million USD respectively. All Cray X-MPEA/se computers have a clock cycle of 8.5 nanoseconds, which is a 15% reduction compared to the previous computer clock cycle (10 nanoseconds). In addition, all Cray X-MPEA/se computers can be operated in a mode compatible with Cray Y-MP systems, so users equipped with such computers can transition to Cray Y-MP structures. The Cray Y-MP8 mainframe is now available, while the Cray Y-MP 2 and Kray Y-MP4 mainframes will enter the market in the third quarter of 1989. However, the structure that enables these three types of hosts to perform their maximum functions will not be available until the second quarter of 1990. Users who had previously ordered the Cray Y-MP system could extend their system to their maximum capacity when the corresponding structure was available.
