The decomposition of cellulose ester polymers used as a film base is one of the major issues in film preservation. The byproduct acid formed during the decomposition, once it reaches a certain concentration (autocatalytic point), catalyzes and accelerates the decomposition reaction. In addition to the controlled storage of low temperature and low relative humidity, the removal of byproduct acid from the decomposed film is a way to reduce the rate of decomposition, and it is also an effective control method to promote the diffusion of acid from the substrate. Cassette requirements are well sealed and provide a cushioning effect on the internal microclimate. However, this seal also reduces the ability of the acid formed by the decomposition to diffuse out of the film. It is common practice to drill holes in the wall of the cassette to allow the diffused gas to escape. This paper investigates the role of film-opening as a method of long-term storage of motion picture film.
