学界对伊迪斯·华顿纽约小说《欢乐之家》中消费问题的探讨偏向于关注上流社会有闲的生活方式、豪奢住宅环境和女性消费,而忽视了老纽约社会各阶层消费行为的差异、造成差异的潜在原因以及男女消费主体的内在的心理机制。文章从老纽约社会消费群体的行为差异、社会场域里的资本竞争和隐形符号暴力、消费主体的“瘾癖”和自我认同三个方面入手,阐释20世纪初老纽约消费的特点及深层原因,旨在倡导一种健康的消费伦理观。
The academic study of the consumption problems in Edith Wharton’s New York novel The House of Joy tended to focus on the idle lifestyles, luxury housing and women’s consumption in the high society, while ignoring the differences in consumer behavior among all walks of life in Old New York society , The potential causes of the differences and the inherent psychological mechanisms of male and female consumers. This essay analyzes the characteristics of old New York consumption in the early twentieth century from the behavior difference of old New York social consumers, the capital competition and hidden symbol violence in the social field, the “addiction” and the self-identity of consumers. The reason is to advocate a healthy ethics of consumption.
