President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the United States in September represented a forthright and forward-looking exchange of views aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation， evident in the issues that were addressed and the results reached. Hotbutton issues such as cybersecurity， investment， and the South China Sea were all subjected to discussion during the visit， which will no doubt exert a positive influence on China-U.S. relations and world peace and development at large.
One important result arising from Xi’s visit was the improvement of mutual trust and the dispelling of groundless suspicions. President Xi has made it clear to the American Government and people that China intends to pursue peaceful development and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Both countries have reassured each other of their respective strategic intentions， their ever-increasing common interests and their responsibilities to maintain world peace， stability and development. This constituted yet another sincere and in-depth exchange of opinions on the topic of China-U.S. strategic mutual trust following the two presidents’previous meetings in California and Beijing. The visit guarantees that Sino-U.S. relations will move forward toward a new model of major country relationship.
Enhancing cooperation was another major outcome of the visit. The two sides reached consensus in a great number of areas： the economy， trade， energy， the Internet， culture， environmental protection， finance， science and technology， agriculture， law enforcement， defense， aviation and infrastructure construction. A batch of agreements were signed， which will be of great import moving forward. Cooperation in the aforementioned areas has further expanded the two countries’common interests. Also， as China and the United States engage in increasingly more interaction and cooperation on regional and international affairs， the strategic results achieved this time round will have global implications.
In addition， the two countries’ leaders held talks aimed at managing differences， improving communication and minimizing misunderstandings， and reached consensus on handling problems using constructive means. Such means will prevent disruption of the two countries’cooperative endeavors and allow them to clear obstacles in bilateral relations. Those who believe that China-U.S. relations have reached a tipping point may well change their views in the wake of Xi’s visit.
China will continue to uphold an independent foreign policy of peace. It will never seek to expand through hegemonic means. The development of Sino-U.S. relations will not be distracted by irresponsible conjecture or loose talk. Rather the two sides should respect each other and seek common ground while trying to narrow differences， so as to guarantee the development of a salubrious relationship. Indeed， strengthened cooperation and exchanges between the two will represent a blessing—to China， the United States and the world at large.
